Watercolor and gouache on paper, framed under glass. With brass plate label stating, "Original Design Concept of Emmy/Submitted to TV Academy/By Lou McManus - 1948." This was the winning submission of a contest held in 1948 by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to design a statuette for the Emmy Awards. Lou McManus, a television engineer, used his wife as the model; her wings represent the Muse of Art and the atom represents the Electron of Science. This design sketch was framed in the 1950s by the art department at Warner Bros. and was lent for display at the Academy headquarters in Burbank.
