O. Cameron Gruner (English, 1877-1972). "A Treatise on the Canon of Medicine of Avicenna Incorporating a Translation of the First Book" by O. Cameron Gruner, M.D., published 1930 by Luzac & Co. (London, England), and inscribed by the author to the free endpaper "Dr. Nightingale / With the Author's sincerest remembrance / March 1931.". A first edition book incorporating the English translation of the first book of the Canon of Avicenna based on the Latin versions published in Venice in 1595 and 1608 and supported by the Arabic edition printed in Rome in 1593, the Canon being a an encyclopedia of medicine in five books compiled by Persian philosopher Avicenna completed in 1025AD which set the standards for medicine in Medieval Europe and the Islamic world and was used as the standard medical text through the 18th century. Book with original black cloth binding with gilt lettering in English to spine and in Arabic to front cover. Approximately 9.875" x 6.625" x 1.5". Provenance: From the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.
