After Anthony Van Dyke (Flemish, 1599-1641) Profile Portrait of Charles I Unsigned, identified on a label from Colonial Williamsburg Foundation affixed to the frame backing. Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 in. (76.0 x 63.5 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, craquelure, minor dots of retouch. N.B. This portrait is reprised from Van Dyck's Charles I in Three Positions. It focuses on the left 1/3 of the original work showing Charles's full profile. Painted in 1635 or 1636, Van Dyck's original work is currently part of the Royal Collection. In the triple portrait, the colors of the costumes and pattern of the lace collars are different in each view of the sitter, but the blue riband of the Order of the Garter is present in all three, as it is in the painting at hand. Many copies of van Dyck's triple portrait were made, possibly by supporters of the royal House of Stuart, including one created around 1750 and now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Provenance: The estate of George Way. Estimate $800-1,200 Framed dimensions are 35 1/2 x 30 1/2 x 2 inches. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
