Manner of Marcus Geeraerts the Younger (Flemish 1561-1635) Man in a Ruff, Said to be Thomas Cecil, First Earl of Exeter, K. G. Attributed and identified in inscriptions in a later hand on the reverse, with three unidentified wax seals on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 33 x 28 1/4 in. (84.0 x 71.8 cm), unframed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure. N.B. Marcus Geeraerts the Younger was active in England at the era of Elizabeth I. The portrait at hand seems a good likeness of known images of Thomas Cecil, although the coat of arms at u.l. seems unrelated. The sitter wears the insignia of the Order of the Gold Fleece on the chain around his neck. Provenance: The estate of George Way. Estimate $600-800 Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
