Ary Stillman (American, 1891-1967) The Lover's Tea Signed faintly "Stillman" l. r. Oil on canvas, 32 1/4 x 26 in. (81.9 x 66.0 cm), framed. Condition: Craquelure, two areas of conservation apparent on the reverse, narrow, vertical line of retouch (approximately 3 inches) l.c. Provenance: A private New England collection. Estimate $800-1,200 Framed dimensions are 40 1/2 x 34 x 2 1/2 in. Small fragment of a paper label from Andre Seligmann, New York, on the back of the frame (taped over with clear plastic tape). The brochure from Andre Seligmann, Inc., "Recent Paintings- Ary Stillman" (December 1-31, 1942), includes a painting titled "Out of Doors" as cat. no. 20. However the description does not include dimensions or any other information that could prove a definitive match for the painting at hand. This brochure seems to be the only publication that Seligmann produced for Ary Stillman's works. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
