First edition, quarto, folding copper-plate engraved map with route marked by hand in red bound as frontispiece, illustrated with twenty-one illustrations, consisting of twenty hand-tinted views and portraits, and one chart with hand-outlining; a slightly rough copy with signs of handling, some tears, and other defects, in contemporary boards with an old and failing rebacking, a good candidate for restoration of this book with subtly hand-colored views of people and places in Madeira, Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, Vietnam, and the non-Bantu Khoisan people of Southern Africa; 10 1/8 x 8 in.
