Anglo School, Late 18th to Early 19th Century Sir John Borlaise Warren Defeating the French off Cherbourg. Signed "I.T. Short" l.r. Watercolor on paper, depicting a naval battle scene between the English and French in the Revolutionary War, sight size 8 7/8 x 11 1/ 4 in., in a black painted molded wood frame. Condition: Tears, creases, staining, toning, tiny losses, not examined out of frame. Note: John Borlaise Warren (1753-1822) was born in Nottingham, England, and joined the Royal Navy in April of 1771, working his way through the ranks at speed and became greatly involved in the aftermath of the French Revolution. He was renowned for his leadership in the Battle of the Glorious First of June 1794, in which the French were soundly defeated.
