Newell Convers Wyeth (American, 1882-1945) One January Afternoon Incised signature "NC WYETH" l. l. Oil on canvas, 20 x 16 in. (51 x 40.8 cm), framed. Condition: Minor scattered retouch to edges, craquelure. Provenance: Gift from Nathan Wyeth, the artist's brother, to the father of the current owner. N.B. The above is an original illustration for The Quest of Narcisse Lablanche , by George T. Marsh, which appeared in the May 1916 issue of Scribner's Magazine. The lot is accompanied by a copy of a letter from the Brandywine River Museum, discussing the piece as well as a copy of the Scribner's catalog file card, documenting the piece. Born in Needham, Massachusetts, N.C. Wyeth became one of America's foremost illustrators, with his work appearing in almost every major magazine publication. His work is included in the collections a number of museums and is currently on view in exhibitions at the Denver Art Museum, the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Spencer Museum of Art, and the Brandywine River Museum.
