William Howard Yorke (British 1847-1921) Portrait of the Barque Phonizia at Tunsberg. Signed and dated "W.H. Yorke 1897." Oil on canvas, depicting the ship flying the Norwegian flag with a lighthouse off the starboard bow, 19 1/2 x 28 1/4 in. Condition: loss of paint in upper sky, small punctures, reframed. Note: William Howard Yorke (1847-1921) and his father were marine artists who settled in Liverpool, England, c. 1855. While William G. Yorke, the father, moved to New York, his son continued painting ship portraits in England. William H. Yorke's paintings have a distinctive use of bow and stern reflections. The Phonizia was built in 1882 in Brake, on J. Oltman's shipyard in Germany, measured 152'8" long x 33 ' wide x 17'9" deep, and weighed 786 gross tons with a flag signalling "HKLR." Her owner in 1899 was the shipping company Phonizia. She was registered in the home harbor Tunsberg in Norway. In 1895, T. Torgersen was captain.
