William Howard Yorke (British, 1847-1921) Portrait of the American Ship "Cyrus Wakefield. " Signed and dated "W.H. Yorke 1894," l.r. Oil on canvas, the ship identified on bow, pennant, and on plaque below, depicting the vessel in full sail, flying an American flag, sailing in choppy waters with coastline, lighthouse and vessels in the distance, 19 3/4 x 31 in., in a later molded giltwood frame. Condition: Reinforced tacking strip, minor retouch. Note: William Howard Yorke (1847-1921) and his father William G. Yorke settled in Liverpool, England, about 1855. They were both marine artists. While William G. Yorke departed for New York, his son continued in England. William H. Yorke's paintings have a distinctive use of bow and stern reflections. The ship "Cyrus Wakefield" was built in 1882 in Thomaston, Maine. Under blacklight there is one spot of retouch at u.c is about 3/4 in. dia. the rest of the painting shows numerous tiny spots of retouch both on vessel and background, only detectable under black light. . The tacking edge is reinforced with a strip of conservation material.
