Chippendale Mahogany Carved Block-front Slant-lid Desk, Massachusetts, c. 1760-80. Provenance: This piece descended in the family from Samuel Abbot, Esq. (1732-1812) of Andover, Massachusetts. He was one of the founders of the Andover Theological Seminary, which was dedicated in 1808, and a leading member for 59 years of the South Church in Andover. Samuel Abbot gave many gifts to the church, including money, a flagon, a bell, and a clock, according to Historical Sketches of Andover, Massachusetts , by Sarah L. Bailey, Boston, 1880.
