Norman Rockwell (American, 1894-1978) Hope It's a New Plymouth Signed "Norman Rockwell" l. l., titled within the composition. Oil with graphite and gouache on paperboard, 13 x 28 1/4 in. (32.9 x 71.6 cm), unframed. Condition: Pentimento of signature l.r., glue residue, nicks, creases and losses to edges of support. N.B. Norman Rockwell's unparalleled success as an illustrator was due to his ability to produce images which were at the same time nostalgic and an expression of future hopes and aspirations of Americans. Rockwell was extremely popular throughout his career, becoming a "household name" from the numerous magazine covers, illustrations, and advertisements that he produced. Although he is perhaps best known for his cover illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post (of which there are over 300), Rockwell illustrated many advertisements and billboards, for brands such as Plymouth, Jell-O and Orange Crush. The glue is almost exclusively to the margins. The tears and creases to the support or primarily to the margins as well, but several effect the image along the left side. The work might benefit from cleaning.
