Joseph Whiting Stock (American, 1815-1855) Portrait of a Young Woman in Black. Inscribed "Painted by J.W. Stock, August 1837," on the reverse of the canvas. Oil on canvas depicting the woman with dark brown hair wearing a black dress with lace-trimmed neckline, seated before a red drapery, 30 x 25 in., in a later molded black-painted wood frame. Condition: Craquelure, scattered paint losses, retouch.
