Walnut and Yellow Pine Sugar Chest, possibly North Carolina, early 19th century, the rectangular hinged top opens to a deep well and dovetail and nail-constructed box on base with applied mid-molding and ogee molded panels with a single drawer and square stiles continuing to turned tapering legs, (imperfections and repairs), ht. 35, wd. 33, dp. 17 1/2 in. Note: Backboard signed in black paint "JR Elam Statesville NC." Top has repairs; perpendicular supports to keep the two-part top together; hinges probably replaced; patched on the back; lock has been replaced; top may lack applied molded edge; large chip to the left of the lock; crack in one of the rear legs; both the chest and the drawer are dovetailed only in the front.
