Rubens Santoro (Italian, 1859-1942) Mending the Nets/An Italian Coastal View Signed and dated "Rubens Santoro 80" l. l. Oil on canvas, 20 1/2 x 29 1/2 in. (51.8 x 75.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, craquelure. Provenance: Descended within a prominent Boston family. N.B. Rubens Santoro was born in Mongrassano, a small town in the Calabria region of southern Italy. He studied with Giovanni Battista at the Naples Academy, where he later returned as a professor. Santoro traveled throughout Italy and Europe and is best known for his beautifully detailed Italian landscapes. His work, like that of his contemporary Frederico del Campo, is marked by exacting detail and striking luminosity. The piece has a glue lining. The craquelure is stable. The work might benefit from a gentle cleaning.
