English, 18th century. Black lacquered and chinoiserie decorated tall or longcase clock, the flat hood over a molded arched face and conforming glazed door enclosing the dial with seconds hand and date ring with Roman and Arabic numerals, dolphin and mask spandrel bosses headed with roundel engraved Timothy Mason Gainsbro. The Japanned waist has rectangular long door with raised chinoiserie decoration and glazed circular lenticle enclosing pendulum and 2 weights; base has painted decoration; rectangular molded-edge plinth pedestal. The time and strike weight driven movement is constructed in brass. It is designed to run eight days on a full wind and to strike each hour on a bell. Approximate height 82", width 20.25", depth 10.5". Timothy Mason of Gainsborough known working dates are c1730 -1734, address given as Lords Street, Gainsborough.
