Davis, Jefferson (1808-1889) Signed Military Commission, 1 July 1855. Single page printed document on paper, completed by hand. Appointing the newly West Point-graduated Samuel Breck Jr. (1834-1918) to the rank of Brevet Second Lieutenant of Artillery, attached temporarily to the First Artillery in New York City, Company H. Old folds, water stains, 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 in. Breck's first commission, marking the start of an important military career that eventually brought him to the rank of Assistant Adjutant General. Breck was also in the same class at West Point with James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903); some of their correspondence is extant, and Breck's recollections of Whistler at West Point are sometimes recounted.
