Rare Pair of Jade and Enamel Bangles, Marie Zimmermann, each designed as carved jade and polychrome enamel dragons holding a red bead, interior cir. 7 5/8 in., in original signed fitted box, Gramercy Park, New York. Note: Pictured in The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann , p. 203. The essay explains that these bangles show Zimmermann's expressions of color, line, and decoration, and it is likely that she designed and possibly even executed the enameling of the metalwork. These bracelets were included in a 1939 exhibition of her work in Santa Barbara, and she kept them throughout her life. Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972) metalsmith, jeweler, and designer was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She studied at the Packer Collegiate Institute, Art Students' League, and Pratt Institute. Her diverse influences included Egyptian, Classical, and Chinese forms, and she experimented with these motifs. She ran her studio at the National Arts Club in New York City from around 1910-1937. Her eclectic work is in numerous museums in the United States including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
