The Goddard family and their relatives the Browns were old Rhode Island families, the Goddards being beneficiaries of large 18th century land grants. The Browns were early West Indies and China trade merchants, founders of Brown University, and participants in the enterprise of westward expansion through railroads and mining ventures.
