Text in Russian and French, 4to (254 x 177 mm) quarter-leather titled to spine; 212 pages, illustrated with frontispiece and plates (tissue guards preserved). Inscribed by the publisher. Princess Maria Nikolaevna Volkonskaya (1805-1863): one of the most remarkable women in Russian history. Daughter of the famous general N. N. Rayevsky, wife of dekabrist Prince S. G. Volkonsky. When Prince was sent to Siberia, Maria Volkonskaya shared the exile with her husband.
