oil on canvas 30. 5 x 26 cm (12 x 10 1/4 in.) signed in Cyrillic and dated center right PROVENANCEPurchased by the parents of the present owner in New York, 1970sThe daughter of the famous artist Aleksei Venetsianov (1780-1847), and a very talented artist in her own right, Alexandra Venetsianova lived at Safonkovo, the country estate that her father founded and where he taught more than seventy painters, his daughter among them. When not at Safonkovo, she lived with her father in St. Petersburg. Venetsianova's paintings are in the collection of the Tretyakov Museum (Starik krest'janin [Old Peasant], 1842) and the Tver Art Museum (Pochtovaja stancija [Post Office]).
