Julien Le Roy a Paris, No. 3911, made by his son Pierre, circa 1764. Very fine 18K three coloured gold, quarter dumb repeating watch. Double body, Louis XV, the bezel chased with a floral and rocaille decoration, the back decorated with a fine composition of flowers and outer rocaille decoration. White enamel with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minute ring. Gold Louis XV hands. Hinged gilt brass full plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement with plain steel three-arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass continental cock pierced and engraved with the initials: J.L.R.", with polished steel end-piece. Repeating on the case by depressing the pendant with the anchor escapement used as a regulator for the striking train. Signed on the dial and back plate, the dial plate engraved with the inscription: Invente par Jul. Le Roy en 1740 et le 1ouage en 1755. Diann 45 mm. Notes Although signed "Julien I.e Roy", this watch was made by his son Pierre after his death (the cock pierced and engraved "J.L.R." was used by Pierre Le Roy after the death of his father). The inscription : b eente par Julien Le Roy en 1740, refers to the invention so-called A bale lever, and the date 1755, to the repealing train with an anchor escapement used as regulator (see Ch. Allis and G. Brusa : Antiquarian Horology, June 1972, an off-print copy comes with the watch).
