Thomas Yates, Preston, No. 2311, with Chester hallmarks for 1855. Fine and unusual silver watch with Yates patent escapement. Three body "forme quatre baguettes" by Edward Kirkman (Master Mark), engine-turned with fixed cuvette. Egg-shell enamel with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds. Gold "fleurs-de-lys" hands. Hinged gilt brass full plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee with chain, pointed tooth lateral single roller lever escapement with half-seconds beating two-arm compensation balance with gold timing screws and ruby end-stone, flat balance spring. Gilt brass dustcap. In good condition. Signed on the dial and back plate. Diam. 50 mm. Notes Following Thomas Yates patent, the unusual wheel rain of this watch was specially calculated for a hall-seconds beating balance: Wheel Pinion Fusee 75 teeth 2nd wheel 64 teeth 10 leaves 3rd wheel 60 teeth 8 leaves 4th wheel 56 teeth 8 leaves Escape wheel 15 teeth 11 leaves 64 x 60/8 x 56/8 x 15/14 x 2 = 72(10 oscillations per hour or 2 per second.
