Italian School, 17th Century The Sacrifice of Isaac Unsigned. Oil on canvas on an oval stretcher, 17 1/2 x 13 3/4 in. (44.5 x 35.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, stable craquelure, old losses and abrasions, skinning. Retouch to foliage u.r. and u.l. in areas measuring approximately 3 x 2 in. on each side. Retouch to highlight folds of Abraham's robe and ends of the logs beneath Isaac. Old repair with retouch l.l. which appears to be a curved tear measuring 3 in. and then perhaps continuing with second old tear measuring another 2 - 3 inches. However the second area does not fluoresce under black light. There is another area of old repair l.r. measuring about 2 x 3 in. Craquelure overall, with scattered small paint losses, now mostly varnished over. Probable over-cleaning which reveals red under-layer. Surface of painting is uneven, and it is varnished with a high gloss varnish..
