J. D. Piguet & P. Meylan à Genève, No.140, circa 1820. Extremely fine and rare 18 ct. gold and enamel, quarter-repeating "barking dog" automaton watch. Three body "Empire" with reeded band, bezels chased with vari-coloured cast floral decoration, engine-turned back. Gilt brass hinged cuvette. Eccentric gold engine-turned with Roman numerals on a polished reserve. Blued-steel Breguet hands. Dial plate of blue translucent enamel over engine-turning, with below the dial a vari-coloured applied scene of an automaton dog, running behind a goose. Gilt brass half plate movement with free standing barrel, cylinder escapement, plain balance, flat spring.Pump wound "barking" train activating a Dellows by depressing the pendant. Signed cuvette, stamped case. In perfect condition. Diam. 59 mm. Notes The full signature of Piguet and Meylan is rarely found on a watch and it is perhaps therefore noteworthy that this particular example of the barking dog automaton is not only of large size but also of vastly superior quality, and in virtually mint condition.
