Greenwood (American, 1857-1927) Spring in the Hills Signed and dated "J H Greenwood '24" l.r., autumn landscape sketch on the reverse, a label from The Casson Galleries, Boston, affixed to the reverse. Oil on panel, 8 1/2 x 11 1/2 in. (21.6 x 29.2 cm), framed (under glass). Condition: Retouch, surface grime, not examined out of frame. Provenance: Descended within a Massachusetts family. Eight nails through autumn landscape sketch on the reverse (prohibiting examination out of the frame), pencil inscription "V-79/ 8 5/8 x 11 1/2/ V-79" on the reverse, in a period Arts and Crafts frame, varnish inconsistencies, several dots of retouch to u.l. quadrant less than 1/8 in. diameter, very fine craquelure to u.r. quadrant in paint layer.
