Maurice Brazil Prendergast (American, 1858-1924) Maine , c. 1920-23 Signed "Prendergast" in pencil l.r., inscribed "M. Prendergast 'Maine' 1920? - circa 1915-20" in pencil on the reverse. Watercolor and pencil on paper, 11 1/8 x 14 5/8 in. (28.3 x 37.1 cm), framed. Condition: Small (1/4 inch) tear at center top edge, small crease to l.r. corner, sheet with gentle toning, rippling, and slightly irregular edges. Provenance: The artist to Charles Prendergast, 1924; to Mrs. Charles Prendergast, 1948; to private collection, 1987. Literature: Clark, Carol, Nancy Mowll Mathews, and Gwendolyn Owens. Maurice Brazil Prendergast, Charles Prendergast: a catalogue raisonné (Williamstown, MA: Williams College Museum of Art, 1990), #1339, p. 533. Small abrasion to paper u.r. corner, that appears to be original to the sheet.. Sheet is held in mat with archival corners. The sheet is cockled, and there are handling creases near the right side. One of these was pressed and has breaks to the paper fibers (visible in the purple mountain at the right edge).
