American School, Possibly J. Brown (American, 1772-1872) Portrait of Lucy Bently Wheeler of Stonington Connecticut. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, mounted on Masonite, c. 1815, 54 1/4 x 28 1/4 in., in a later arched molded wood frame. Condition: Scattered retouch and other imperfections. Provenance: Descended in the family of the sitter until sometime in the 20th century, sold at Sotheby's, February 1, 1986, Lot 462. Exhibitions: The Lyman-Allyn Museum, Eighty Eminent Painters of Connecticut, March 9-April 20th, 1947; The Silvermine Guild, Norwalk, Connecticut, American Primitive Show, 1953. Retouch to numerous areas, primarily to dress and background, very minor touch-up to face, the top of the canvas may have been altered to fit the arched frame.
