Appliqued and Stuffed Cotton "California Rose" Quilt Top or Summer Spread, America, probably late 19th/early 20th century, composed of nine stuffed California Rose motifs in solid red, green, and orange, and red-printed fabrics on a white ground, all but the hem hand-stitched, (imperfections), 85 x 85 in. There are about 15 mends, mostly small (approx. 1/2 in.) mended spots on the background fabric, some are neatly overstitched- almost woven, some are strengthened with cotton on the back, a couple are actual neatly done patches, (the largest is about 1 1/2 in. dia.), all the mends are unobtrusive unless under close inspection. There are seven very small 1/8 in. dia. light brownish stains at the center of one edge. The colored fabric is a little faded.
