Jean Lambert-Rucki (French, 1888-1967) The Umbrella Man, c. 1950 Unsigned. Welded iron sculpture, height 41 in. (104.0 cm). Condition: Wear to surface, minor surface abrasions. Provenance: From the atelier of the artist to Parisian art dealer Marc Lamourie, to Private Collection, New York, to Skinner, Inc., Sale No. 2194/Lot 367, to current owner. N.B. The lot is accompanied by a copy of a letter in French (with translation) from Thessa Thèolier, dated May 15, 2003, detailing the early provenance. Born in Krakow, Lambert-Rucki moved to Paris in 1911 (and became a French citizen in 1932). Shortly after his arrival in Paris he began friendships with the artists of Montparnasse, including Modigliani and Kisling. In 1920 he met the influential dealer Léonce Rosenberg, who began offering his works together with those of Picasso and Leger, among others. There are rubs and surface abrasions, primarily along the rim of the umbrella. The uprights have subtle oxidation. There is minor dust and soiling to the interstices.
