Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (French, 1796-1875) Jeune fille assise lisant, les cheveux sur les épaules Signed "Corot" l. r. Oil on canvas, 12 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. (32.3 x 24.7 cm), framed. Condition: Canvas trimmed, lined, and laid on board, retouch, craquelure, minor frame abrasions. Provenance: Sold by the artist to M. Tédesco c. 1873-74; Knoedler New York, no. 45731; Collection of Mrs. Harvey H. Bundy, then by descent within the family. Literature: Alfred Robaut, L'Oeuvre de Corot (Paris: éd. Floury, 1905), Vol. III, pp. 10-11 (illus.). N.B. This work has been authenticated by Martin Dieterle and Claire Lebeau, and a photo certificate accompanies the lot. The painting is thought to date between 1855 and 1860. Canvas laid on board and backed with a stretcher measuring 13 5/16 x 10 1/2 in. (33.9 x 26.6 cm). The framed dimensions are 16 1/2 x 13 1/2 in. There is a small dot of retouch on the open book, a few small dots in the figure's hands, and along the edge of her cheek. Perhaps some old retouch in a band across the top of the composition, about 2 cm wide. Craquelure is very fine and stable. In their certificate, Martin Dieterle and Claire Lebeau declare the painting to be in a very good state of conservation ("Très bon état de conservation"). Label on the stretcher from the Museum of Fine Arts bearing typed information as follows: "126.62/Corot, Girl Reading/Lent by Mrs. Harvey Bundy." Also on the stretcher is a second gummed label, presumably from Knoedler
