Howard Gilt Zinc and Copper Rooster Weathervane, J. Howard, West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, c. 1854-67, two-part hollow cast zinc flattened full-body vane, with corrugated sheet copper tail and cast copper feet, supported on an iron bar, weathered painted surface, with stand, (minor imperfections), ht. 27, lg. 24 1/4 in. Provenance: Leo Legare Auction; discovered by Hercules Pappachristos in the metropolitan Boston area. Literature: A similar rooster vane by J. Howard is illustrated in The Art of the Weathervane , by Steve Miller, Schiffer Publishing Ltd., Pennsylvania, 1984, p. 37, and A Gallery of American Weathervanes and Whirligigs , by Robert Bishop and Patricia Coblentz, Crown Publishers, 1981, p. 34. Seam separation on wattle and breast, some dents to tail, weathered paint .
