American School, 19th Century View of Philipsburg Manor, Upper Mills. Unsigned. Pastel on paper, 15 1/2 x 19 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Small loss u.l. edge, otherwise good. Note: Philipsburg Manor was an English manor owned by Adolph Philipse (1665-1750), and was built in the 17th century. It consisted of an estate of over 50,000 acres in Westchester County and the present-day Bronx. The Upper Mills complex served as one of two headquarters for the manor, and was a commercial farm, providing food- mainly wheat products and other rural commodities, to the urban population of New York and to plantations in the West Indies. Between 1680 and 1750, enslaved Africans constructed, operated, and resided on the complex that consisted of a mill, manor house, bake house, slave house, wharves, and a church.
