Jean François Millet (French, 1814-1875) Two Figural Drawings: Study for La Fileuse Auvergnate (Seated Woman with a Distaff) and Study for L'Amour Transi Both with the artist's studio stamp "J. F.M." (Lugt, 1460b) in ink l.r. Fileuse chalk with applied grid, the verso blackened for transfer, on watermarked paper with a collector's stamp on the reverse , 13 5/16 x 9 3/16 in. (35.0 x 23.5 cm); L'Amour chalk on paper, 12 1/4 x 8 in. (31.0 x 20.3 cm). Condition: Fileuse with staining, rippling, toning, creases, nicks and wear to edges of sheet, hinged to back mat; Amour with toning, handling creases, hinged to window mat with cellophane tape in two places. Provenance: Purchased from Ernest Brown & Phillips, Ltd., London, 1961.
