Embroidered Gauze Formal Dragon Robe, China, 19th century, the navy blue gauze woven with dragon roundels and embroidered with four roundels at the chest, back, and sleeves, each with five-clawed dragons detailed in gold thread amidst clouds, with a flaming pearl, above a lishui border, lg. 43 in. Provenance: Purchased in Beijing at the turn of the century when the current owner's grandmother was stationed at the Princeton University Alumni organized YMCA outpost, as reported in The Princeton Alumni Weekly , Vol. XIV, No. 18, February 11, 1914.
