Rare and important painted pine Mahantongo Valley, Pennsylvania chest of drawers, ca. 1830 , with a rectangular top with molded frieze over a case with two short and three long graduated drawers, resting on turned feet, the paneled ends with a rectangular cartouche with fans in the corners centering on a central pinwheel and fans in the corners of the panel in polychrome colors of yellow, black, and green on a reddish/brown ground, the two short drawers with outlined cartouches, fan corners and birds and flowering vines flanked by pinwheels, the first and third long drawers with rectangular cartouches with fans in the corners and a central urn with a flowering tree arising to two birds flanked by pinwheels, the second long drawer with a cartouche with fan corners and the center with flowering trees and birds arising from two prancing stags, flanked by pinwheels, the front of the case with a yellow and green stamped flower head surround, all in polychrome on a reddish/brown ground.
