George III Giltwood Armchair, England, c. 1770s, shield-back with carved rose bud and leaf tendril crest, sloped arms, probably of limewood, seat rails and front legs are beech, with notches in bottom seat rail, later re-gilding, ht. 37, wd. 24, dp. 22 in. N. B. This chair can be compared to a similarly styled set of chairs made for Brodsworth Hall, Yorkshire, by an unknown maker, which were late 18th century chairs re-gilded and re-upholstered in 1863, shortly after the Hall was built. Architect Philip Wilkinson was hired to build the Hall, under the direction of the Thellusson family whose heirs bought the estate in 1791. Robert Hay-Drummond, later Archbishop of York, had owned the estate beginning in 1758. Paintings and some parts of the estate were sold during financial constraints from 1913 to 1930.
