Signed by Brian Wilson Paper and Acrylic Paint on Fiberglass. Lauren Evans is a visual artist who works in a variety of techniques, including sculpture and digital media. Reoccurring themes include metaphors that depict childhood labeling and our human struggles with control. Her work frequently deals with the formation of childhood and the incredible difficulties that can be encountered in that process of growth. She combines the apparently innocent objects of youth with items of the everyday world and with text in ways that are evocative of that particularly vulnerable time. Her work examines the challenges and turmoil that everyone faces throughout life, using visual metaphors for awkwardness, uneasiness, or instability. The newest works that include vertical towers of rhinos on mousetraps or trapped in a slinky also have a comic aspect. The addition of humor to pathos makes clear that our selves are mosaics of many factors and internal and external influences. Evans received her BFA and MFA, with an emphasis in sculpture, at the University of Southern California. She has exhibited nationally and has been included in several public art projects in Los Angeles and San Diego counties. Evans teaches sculpture, design, and art appreciation at College of the Desert and Los Angeles Southwest College. "Good Vibrations" celebrates Southern California icon Brian Wilson.
