Indian, 20th century. A large and very finely carved soapstone sculpture depicting a rotund Asian elephant striding forwad with trunk extended down, the body entirely carved with Jali scrolling latticework through which is seen two smaller Jali carved elephants with intertwining trunks bearing on their backs three even smaller carved elephants and eight birds all within the body cavity of the main elephant, the elephant's head filled with carved figural birds on a rocky outcropping with leaves. Overall approximate height 10", width 15", depth 9.75".
