With a background in advertising, Shepard Fairey is well aware of the power of marketing to influence consumer's decision. Influenced by Barbara Kruger's campaign surrounding reproductive rights using her art, Shepard juxtaposed slogans with unrelated images to change the original meaning of the phrase - and thus OBEY was born. He later developed this concept by employing wordplay and further developing the slogan to communicate political values - and thus a corrupt democractic statement of "New World Order" changes to "New World Odor" where the stink of power requires a gas mask.
