British, first quarter of 19th century (circa 1819), Royal Navy cannon powder monkey bucket composed of a staved wood barrel covered in canvas on interior and exterior decorated with painted and gilt accented Royal Navy heraldic coat of arms symbol with unicorn and lion. Bucket or cannon powder container with thick brown leather strap attached by brass metal circular rivets. Inscribed on bottom in black with "F58 JA" above "J.A.X. 1819". This lot is an outstanding item of British maritime history. Height 13.3", diameter of top 9.25". Note: These are called monkey buckets as the children who were responsible for running the powder for powder charges from the magazines below the cannons where referred to a "monkeys". Each cannon had his own "monkey".
