Baker Denmark / USA, 1951 ink on paper 23¼ h x 33 w in (59 x 84 cm)
This is the original rendering of the high back sofa drawn by Finn Juhl for Baker Furniture in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The drawing is initialed "FJ" in the lower left corner and features Juhl's distinctive lettering indicating the versatility and comfort of the design. In 1950, Juhl visited the Baker Furniture production facilities and his observations at the factory overcame his initial skepticism that an American company could achieve the quality his designs demanded. Production was begun immediately in order to produce examples of the furniture in time for the large furniture fair in Grand Rapids the following year. An extraordinary rendering of historical importance by the Danish master designer. Signed and stamped, nicely framed.
