Bucks County, Pennsylvania silk on linen sampler, early 19th c. , worked at the Loller Acadamy, sic. Hatboro, depicting a young woman standing in front of a building within an elaborate floral border, initialed GRR and dated 1831 , 16 1/2" x 21 3/4". Judge Robert Lollar joined General George Washington during the Revolutionary War and fought in the Battle of Trenton, Princeton, and Germanton. Also a Colonel, Lollar served as Paymaster at Valley Forge. At his death in 1808, he left funds to build a Seminary of Learning to be called by his name. The Lollar Academy was completed in 1812 at his residence at the south end of Hatboro in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It had a cupola containing a clock built by Isaiah Lukens, who also built the tower clock at the Head House Market in Philadelphia in 1819 and the tavern clock at Independence Hall in 1828, as well as others. Lukens is one of the founding members of the Franklin Institute.
