Emil Carlsen (Danish/American, 1853-1932) Promenade Signed "Milton. July 76 Carlson" at lower edge, inscription on the reverse (see N.B.). Oil on canvas, 26 x 19 1/4 in. (66.0 x 48.9 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, craquelure, surface grime. Provenance: A New York estate. N.B. This work is included in the Emil Carlsen Archives as ECA record control number 26055 (see http://emilcarlsen.org/portfolio/emil-carlsen-two-figures-on-a-path-milton-mass-1883/). The inscription reads: "The following inscription appears on/The reverse of the original canvass [sic]:/Thomas Rensnick/.../Study from/Milton, MASS./P. Emil Carlsen." Estimate $6,000-8,000 Framed dimensions are 33 x 26 x 1 1/2 in. Small dots of retouch to upper center in the clouds. Overall craquelure, but more noticeable in the blue sky. Shrinkles (craquelure with wrinkling) along the bottom edge. The signature and inscription along the bottom of the front of the canvas are very faint and in a very dark area, so they were difficult to photograph. The photos of this area that you will see online have been enhanced to try to show the writing more clearly. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
