Navajo Classic Serape, c. 1860s, tightly woven with natural indigo and cochineal dyes, probably a combination of 3-ply Saxony and handspun churro fleece, the white yarns are undyed churro, the design is a combination of stacked bands separated by three rows of joined serrated diamonds, together with three flat-top diamond devices top and bottom, Claflin inventory number "34586" on a fabric label on the serape, dye testing completed by Dr. David Wenger, of Thomas Jefferson University, confirms the red samples were dyed with cochineal, the results of which will accompany the lot, 68 x 46 in. Provenance: Private collection, Concord, Massachusetts; William H. Claflin Jr. collection, Belmont, Massachusetts; inventory number 34586; purchased c. 1932 from Anne Lauriat Read; collected by Read's aunt, Eliza Hosmer (1833-?) in the 19th century.
