Chippendale Shell-carved Cherry High Chest, Connecticut, 18th century, ht. 71, wd. 37 1/2, dp. 20 1/4 in. Provenance: Malcolm Norton, 1916, Leffingwell Museum House, Norwich, Connecticut. Estimate $2,000-4,000 high chest has been refinished, legs and knee terminals completely restored and pieced, splits to the sides, strip of loss to one side, 6-inch patch to the other, but the carving appears original. As for the legs themselves, there is a photo on the reverse of the piece showing them having been fashioned into a footstool. Unfortunately we are unable to tell if the legs in the photo have the same restoration as those currently on the piece Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
