First edition, octavo, illustrated with portrait frontispiece, one full-page plate, and a folding map of Pitcairn Island, bound in full contemporary sheepskin; binding worn, title page torn with loss to top outside corner, foxing throughout; sewing structure weak at a point in the center of the textblock, front board detached, 8 1/2 x 5 in. Chapter eighteen of the present work, which recounts Delano experience with a slave ship off the coast of Chile in 1799, is the prime source for Herman Melville's novella, Benito Cereno.
