After Francesco Albani (Italian, 1578-1660) The Element of Air Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 20 1/4 x 26 1/8 in. (51.0 x 66.5 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, areas of skinning, fine craquelure. N.B. This painting by an unknown copyist is likely based upon the engraving by Étienne Baudet (French, 1636-1711) after Francesco Albani's original painting, because the composition is reversed from the original. Albani's original was part of a series depicting the four elements. The composition in this instance has been cropped at the bottom. The complete painting and subsequent engraving included Juno in her chariot drawn by two peacocks, surrounded by putti, with her messenger, Iris, Goddess of the Rainbow, above, and Aeolus in the lower right corner opening a wooden door to the cave of the winds. Estimate $1,000-2,000 The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Condition requests can be obtained via email (lot inquiry button) or by telephone to the appropriate gallery location (Boston/617.350.5400 or Marlborough/508.970.3000).
