William Hogarth (British, 1697-1764) Industry and Idleness / A Series of Twelve Framed Engravings Inscribed in the plates "Design'd and Engrav'd by Wm. Hogarth" l.l., titled u.c., and "Publish'd according to Act of Parliament Sep 30, 1747" l.r. Engravings on paper, plate sizes to approximately 10 3/4 x 15 3/4 in. (27.3 x 40.0 cm). Condition: Minor toning, At their Looms with pale staining, not examined out of frames. N.B. It has been noted by authors Joseph Burke and Colin Caldwell ( Hogarth: The Complete Engravings ) that Hogarth stated he adopted a simple style for his tale of the two apprentices, Frank Goodchild and Tom Idle, and sold the prints at a shilling each in order to reach those for whom his moral message was intended.
