Thomas Bowman Garvie (British, 1859-1942) Captain and Honorable Major Edmund Garvie V. D. Identified and dated ".../Painted by his son T.B. Garvie, at Bow Villa, Morpeth, 1893" in an inscription on the reverse, "T.B. Garvie" in ink on printed label from Charles Daggett Gallery, London, affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in. (60.5 x 50.5 cm), framed. Condition: Patch reinforcement with corresponding area of retouch to the l.r. corner of the front, craquelure, minor surface grime. N.B. The inscription on the reverse indicates that the sitter was Quartermaster, First Volunteer Battery, Northumberland Fusiliers. The lot is accompanied by the leather cross belt worn by Captain Garvie in his portrait, bearing the metal badge of the Northumberland Fusiliers.
